In some situations, such as an unexpected death, the coroner may need to be involved. If this happens, the medical certificate may be delayed slightly while enquiries are completed.

Once issued, this certificate allows the death to be formally registered.

Registering the Death

In England, a death must usually be registered within five days at the local register office.

When registering a death, you will need:

  • The deceased’s full name

  • Date and place of birth

  • Last address

  • NHS number (if available)

  • Occupation and marital status
